Travel to Malawi; the real Africa
Would you like to travel to the real Africa? We make your wishes come true and guarantee a unique personal experience, passion for nature and countless new memories when visiting Malawi with us!
Malawi is also called the Warm Heart of Africa and you won’t have to look far to find out why. The people in this relatively small, landlocked African country are genuine, always helpful and you’re always greeted with a big warm smile.
By booking with 1 2 Travel Africa you get the chance to really explore and experience Africa. Enjoying some touristic highlights are always an option, but we focus on the authentic and pure Malawi; our favourite part of Africa where you won’t find any mass tourism. Besides supporting local entrepreneurs with a fascinating story, so you can learn about their life and culture, we will obviously also show you Malawi’s natural beauty.
Malawi boasts a spectacular variety of landscapes with breath-taking views at short distances and is working hard to restore National Parks and Wildlife Reserves to its former glory. Sadly, in the past many Malawians were forced by poverty to illegally cut down trees for firewood and poach wildlife for its meat, but in recent years the situation in the country has improved tremendously and by working closely together with various partner organizations, the Malawi Department of National Parks and Wildlife can be proud of some great conservation achievements. Numbers of elephant, zebra, buffalo, leopard and many antelope species are continuously growing and since the reintroduction of lions and rhinos, Malawi is now again one of Africa’s Big 5 safari destinations. Enthusiastic birders (like ourselves!) should not forget to pack their binoculars and camera with about 650 different bird species in Malawi!
Fascinating local culture
On your travels, you will drive through different regions with their own local cultures. Chewa, Yao, Tumbuka, Tonga and Nyanja are the most well-known. They each have their own language, habits and rituals and if you’re lucky enough, you might be able to experience some of their incredible traditional dances! The rich cultural heritage is definitely one of the reasons to visit Malawi.
Lake Malawi, the Lake of Stars
Visiting the stunning and world-famous Lake Malawi should be on everyone’s bucket list. With 29.600 km² in size it’s the third largest lake in Africa. The crystal-clear water is home to more fish species than any other lake in the world. This includes more than 700 types of colorful cichlids, which you can see beautifully while kayaking or snorkeling at Lake Malawi. It feels like you’re swimming in an enormous aquarium!
From the feel-good backpacker’s vibe with many restaurants, bars and activities at the villages of Cape Maclear and Nkhata Bay, to the crisp white private beaches and fine dining at the luxury lodges along the lake shore and on the islands, there are enough options to bring a huge smile to everyone’s face.
About 150 years ago, the Scottish explorer Dr David Livingstone nicknamed it the Lake of Stars and at night you’ll see why!
Game viewing in South Luangwa
The real safari fans are recommended to combine traveling to Malawi with a trip to South Luangwa National Park, just over the border in Zambia. It has a high density of wildlife and the short distance from Malawi’s capital city Lilongwe makes it easy to visit.
